Board game night doesn't have to be a big family activity. Some of the best board games can be played just fine with a couple – even without modifying the rules. There are plenty of two player friendly games ranging from classic to modern that all range in complexity.
Cooperative games do best in small groups and pairs, but they aren't the only ones. Adding a couple of small-group tabletops to the gaming cabinet can save an otherwise boring night for all types of players.

The Game of Life is a classic board game where players put their peg people into cars and have them go around the board to see what their life is going to end up as. Lifeis one of few games where spinning low is more beneficial than spinning high, as that gives more opportunity to get life tiles— or action cards depending on the edition.
In the end, these can really tip the win over to the person who showed up to retirement last, as they end up with more earnings from their experiences. All editions ofLife have their own flair, from picking a popular media to theme the events after to adding in a pets mechanic. Nothing is hurt by having only two players, asLife is arguably more fun when it's not as crowded.

Fox in the Forest is a gorgeous card game where players try to beat the card in play. There are three suits: bells, keys, and moons. Each suit has certain cards within them that offer special effects such as changing the decree card, automatically winning that hand, or forcing the other player to play specific cards.
The twist is that Fox in the Forest has a multi-round system where how many wins someone gets really matters. If they get too many, their score is actually reset to zero, making a totally viable strategy where one player lets another win as many tricks as possible in order to swipe a win out from under them.
8/10 Pandemic Is Actually Easier With Only Two Players
Pandemic is a classic game that, for obvious reasons, has gained a recent popularity boost. Within the lore of Pandemic, players are trying to find cures for four diseases that have broken out across the world and must work together in order to do so. Pandemicis a game that's deceptively easier with a larger group to divide and conquer, but gameplay actually gets significantly harder with more people. Each city has a chance of getting infected with a specific disease, and small blocks will be placed on those to signify how bad it is there.
It can't go beyond three squares, but if that city is to get a fourth one, it actually causes an outbreak and spreads to the connected city, spiraling out if those also have too many. Players have to find cures for each of the diseases by trading in a specific number of that color of cards at a research center, which is good because there are multiple ways to lose the game. These include running out of cards in the player deck, having ten outbreaks, or running out of a disease's colored blocks. With two players, they can stick together and work far more efficiently with their drawn skills than with a larger group, making Pandemic perfect for two players.
7/10 Forbidden Island Is Never The Same Twice
Forbidden Island is a cooperative game that plays well with two players all the way to four. The tiles are double-sided, with the colorful tiles standing in for dry land and the washed-out blue sides for flooded. Players have to collectively obtain all four treasures and return to Fool's Landing, then use an Air Lift card in order to escape an island that is sinking. A character can take a few actions a round, and each job has its own unique abilities it can do on top of the regular move, shore up, and capturing treasure.
After that, they draw treasure cards— they need four of a kind and to make it to specific tiles in order to capture the treasure— and island cards equal to a meter that goes up every time a Waters Rise card is drawn. If a card is drawn that has a corresponding blue tile, it's removed from the game making it even more pressing to move faster. Not to mention, if both of the areas where treasure can be collected sink before that one has been grabbed, it's game over. It's also game over if Fool's Landing sinks, speeding up a slow paced game in no time at all!
6/10 Love Letter Has Players Competing For The Lady's Affections
Love Letter is a game of deceit and luck unlike other more cooperative games. Players are trying to get their own love letter to the princess who has locked herself into her room. The deck is small, but players have to rely on a lot of trickery and card effects in order to actually stand a chance of getting to the end.
Even so, it's not guaranteed that the princess will come out either, which is a delightfully evil move from the creators. Not only are players trying to get their letters to her, they are also trying to keep all of the others away. Therefore, a lot of strategy is also involved. Playing too many good cards early can risk not having a counter later on and vice versa.
5/10 UpWords Is A Little Twist To The Classic Scrabble
UpWords is almost identical toScrabble, but with one major difference: the tiles can be stacked on top of one another to create a new word. That means words like Pig can turn into Egg which can turn into Log and then Dog ad infinitum. Gone are the days of only adding s, er, ed, and ing to the ends of words when trying to use up tricky letters.
This can easily throw a wrench into the other player's plans when a word they were banking on building off of suddenly turns into something else entirely. At least words can be flipped back and forth, leading to some words with very high stacks of letters.
4/10 Uno Is A Classic For A Reason
Unois a simple matching game where the colors or the numbers on cards can be matched, while wildcards let players pick a new color. In two-player games, there are technically some rule modifications such as to how reverse and skip cards are used, but nobody actually listens to those. Unois a game that can easily be adjusted to suit the competitiveness of each player and is almost more fun to play with only one other person since advanced strategies can be planned out in a way that doesn't work with larger groups.
3/10 Photosynthesis Is Something Unique
Photosynthesisis meant to be competitive, with players trying to get their trees to grow the biggest in the forest. Gameplay often ends up extremely relaxing and fun, especially when there are only two players.
There's a piece that is meant to go around the board to signify where the sunlight is coming from. Trees that get more sunlight can grow better than those that are shaded from other trees, meaning they can't be placed down willy-nilly. Quite a bit of thought has to go into it.
2/10 Dragonrealm: A Game Of Goblins & Gold Is A Fun Little Adventure Game
Dragonrealm: A Game Of Goblins & Goldis a simple game where players are trying to explore Dragonrealm and collect the most treasure in order to take over and rule. However, there are sneaky goblins trying to steal it away, leading to a solid player vs. game scenario.
Players need to collect their adventurers together in a space to gain treasure, roll dice, and draw cards to see what they get and what happens to them. Dragonrealm: A Game Of Goblins & Gold has a slight learning curve, but after a little bit, it can even be played together with a child in a one-on-one setting.
1/10 Dungeon Drop Is Like A Dulled-Down D&D
Dungeon Drop is what would happen ifDungeons and Dragons got together with roguelike video games and had a baby. Not only canDungeon Drop be played with only two people, it can also be played solo. There are a few cards that help the player along in their quests such as race and class cards, and there are tons of cubes to give out loot or have the player fight.
Every drop the dungeon changes, just like procedurally generating levels in a roguelike while having fantasy themes that make it really feel like aD&D campaign. Or, for the tired Dungeon Master, can help build dungeons. All in all, Dungeon Drop is an absolute joy to play for fans of either style of game and is extremely simple to pick up and drop. No two games will ever be the same!
